Torit Language Center Montessori is uniquely positioned to explore all that Dr. Montessori might have envisioned with cosmic and peace education. Cosmic education teaches one's place in the world, in terms of geography, science, culture and more. Our language and culture curriculum supports cosmic education.
Each year in Torit's Montessori Preprimary (3 - 6 year old) class, the children are introduced to and work at their level with the map of North America. Additionally, several more in depth continent studies are done in a rotating schedule so as to cover all of them in three years. (The Montessori Preprimary curriculum is a three year curriculum, graduating students from kindergarten who are more than ready for Montessori or traditional first grade environments.) The continent studies introduce the puzzle maps of each continent and its countries, accompanied by more in-depth cultural studies. Cultural manipulatives are available to the children for several months for each continent study.
Torit adds to all of this by celebrating the holidays recognized by some of the largest or most influential world populations. Each year we recognize Diwali, Hannukah, Christmas, Eid, and Chinese New Year with a week-long introduction of stories, art projects, foods, cultural dress, lights, festivals and more. The process of learning about similarities in holiday celebrations reinforces the peace education in the Montessori curriculum, in which children are encouraged to peer problem solve by understanding each others' perspectives.
